Unstitching Silence

In Caribbean homes, offices, places of workshop, and public sites, gender-based violence persists. National newspapers display red-embazoned headlines of britalities; fearful communities whisper about dangers in their midst. To witness violence connected to gender norms and power dynamics is no easy thing. The ten contributors to this anthology strive to answer the question, “If you split the surface of this violence, what lies beneath, and how can it be written to reach us now?” Gender-based violence often carries the weight of unspoken traumas in its wake. These poems and short stories unstitch such silences with boldness and bravery, in explorations of contemporary society that are nuanced and deft. Unravelling shames and secrecies, Unstitching Silence presents ten visionary Caribbean voices, intent on speaking the truth.
